김백봉

This is a rare photo of 김백봉(Kim Baek-bong, 金白峰) taken during the 20th century. Kim was born on February 12th, 1927 in Gangseo-gun, South Pyeongan Province. During her younger years, she developed a great interest in dance and eventually became a member of 최승희무용단(Choi Seung-hee Dance Company), where she learned from Choi Seung-hee, the founder of modern Korean dance, in the year 1942. Following the liberation from Japanese colonial rule, she became an exceptional choreographer and practiced her skills through working with the company in Pyeongyang during 1946.

Kim Baek-bong later moved to Seoul where she established her very own dance research institute (김백봉 무용연구소). It was during these years that her career truly took off as she had created hundreds of choreographed dance routines. Kim not only spread the beauty of traditional Korean dances through her works but she trained numerous dancers. During the latter half of the 20th century, she worked as a professor of dance at 경희대학교(Kyung Hee University - 1965~1992) and also served as an honorary professor at the Korea National University of Arts’ Department of Dance.

In the late 1950s, Kim Baek-bong toured across the Western world, including Europe and the United States, as well as other regions including Southeast Asia. Some of her most famous works include ‘화관무(Hwagwanmu)’ and ‘부채춤(Buchaechum - Buchae Dance)’. Hwagwanmu was performed during the opening ceremony of the 1988 Seoul Olympics and Buchaechum was performed in the 1968 Mexico Olympics.
