<우파 거사 김공 광지(愚坡居士金公壙誌)>
《향산집(響山集)》
위의 글은 향산(響山) 이만도(李晩燾) 선생이 우파 거사(愚坡居士) 김진린(金鎭麟 1825~1895) 공의 광지(壙誌)1)를 쓰면서 거사가 평소 강조하던 말씀을 소개한 것입니다. 향산 선생은 일제의 조선 침탈 야욕이 본격화할 무렵 의병장으로 활약하였고, 일제에 나라를 빼앗기자 24일간의 단식 끝에 순국하신 분이며, 우파 거사는 평생 벼슬에 나아가지 않고 학문 연마와 후진 양성에 힘쓰신 분이니, 그런 분들의 말씀이라면 그 내용이 매우 엄격하고 단호할 줄 알았는데 위의 말씀을 보면 그렇지도 않습니다.
“사람을 나무랄 때에는 너무 각박하게 하지 말아야 한다.”는 말씀은 상대가 잘못을 범했을지라도 그에 대한 질책이나 비난이 지나치면 오히려 반발심을 부르게 되니 너무 각박하게 질책하여 궁지로 몰지 말고 부드러운 말로 타일러 훗날 선하게 교화될 가능성을 열어놓자는 뜻이겠지요. “말을 할 때에는 여지를 남겨 두어야 한다.”는 말씀은 어떤 말이든 단정 짓거나 쉽게 결론을 내려 뒷날 그것이 잘못되었다는 것을 깨닫고 고치려 해도 이미 돌이킬 수 없는 지경에 이르도록 해서는 안 된다는 의미일 것입니다.
새해가 밝았습니다. 젊은 사람들은 어르신을 찾아뵙고 인사를 드리고, 어르신들은 덕담으로 그들의 앞날을 축복하거나 훈계의 말씀을 통해 바른길로 인도해 주십니다. 그렇지만 간혹 훈계가 지나쳐 듣는 사람을 부담스럽게 하거나 반발심을 불러일으키게까지 해서는 안 되겠지요. 새해가 되면 으레 하는 다짐들도 마찬가지입니다. 올해는 내가 반드시 무엇을 어떻게 하리라. 그렇게 하지 못하면 내가 성을 갈겠네, 손가락에 장을 지지겠네 요란을 떨지만, 세상일이 어디 그렇게 마음대로 되던가요. 그러니 목표를 세우고 이를 여러 사람 앞에 공표함으로써 자신의 의지를 다지는 것은 좋겠지만, 책임지지 못할 약속을 펑펑 터뜨려 놓고 뒷감당 못하는 신용불량자가 되어서는 안 될 것입니다.
독설로 인기를 끌던 어느 연예인은 바로 자신의 그 독설과 말실수 때문에 곤욕을 치르고 방송을 떠났습니다. 최근 유행하는 오디션 프로그램에서는 심사위원이 참가자에게 독설을 던지는 것이 마치 하나의 유행이거나 혹은 당연한 일인 것처럼 보입니다. 그러나 독설은 아무리 좋은 취지로 말한다 해도 듣는 이에게 상처가 될 수밖에 없습니다. 그리고 그 독은 세상을 돌고 돌아 결국 자신에게 돌아올 것입니다. 함부로 단정 짓지 않는 말, 상대에게 상처 주지 않는 말, 듣는 이를 배려하는 말이 필요한 시대입니다.

[JOKES] A RETIREE'S LAST TRIP TO WAL-MART
Yesterday I was at my local Wal-Mart buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.
What did she think I had an elephant?
So because I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.
I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)
Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stopped to pee on a Fire Hydrant and a car hit me.
I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was Laughing so hard.
Wal-Mart won't let me shop there anymore. Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the World to think of crazy things to say. -
